Dr. Lorna R. Lewis, Superintendent of Schools at Malverne Union Free School District, NY

Q&A with Dr. Lorna R. Lewis, Superintendent of Schools at Malverne Union Free School District

Dr. Lewis has implemented Infinite Campus at three New York districts. She refers to Infinite Campus as a 22nd century SIS that looks to the future, supports student achievement, saves district dollars, and evolves with the needs of K12 schools.

Infinite Campus is innovative, flexible, and always ready for the next challenge. The company grows with our needs. I believe Infinite Campus can lead us into the 22nd century because it looks to the future and is solving tomorrow’s problems.

What challenges did you face before first switching to Infinite Campus SIS?
In the early 2000s, I was at Three Village Central School District and we had Pentamation. It was an old system built for businesses, not for school districts focused on teaching and learning. It could not handle scheduling or transcripts; it was a total nightmare.

Why did you select Infinite Campus?
When I saw the scheduling features in Infinite Campus, there was no way in hell I wasn’t going to be on Campus! Plus, I met Charlie Kratsch (Infinite Campus Founder and CEO) back then and realized he had a school background as technology director, knew all the K12 nuances, and was totally school-centered.

Can the Campus SIS save districts money?
The Campus SIS is so cost effective because you don’t need all those third-party vendors. I saved money every time I switched to Campus AND I got a better product.

Any specific savings worth mentioning?  At Three Village, the savings on paper alone was thousands of dollars because with Campus, we no longer needed to print reports cards eight times per year.

Infinite Campus is the only system that responded to COVID. If you had kids in hybrid or in-person or remote, you could still take attendance…that was unique. COVID taught us that we need to be on 21st, maybe even 22nd, century platforms. The kids coming into our schools today will live in the 22nd century…they are our future!

Were other New York districts using Infinite Campus back then?
Three Village…we were the pioneers and the first in New York to select Campus. I showed the Campus SIS to peers at other districts and then many came aboard right after us. I went to East Williston, which was on eSchoolData. All I did was show people the scheduling features and yet another New York district switched to Campus. I then went to another Campus district, Plainview, before coming to Malverne and implementing Campus for the third time.

What is the most common question you get from non-Campus districts?
How painful is the implementation?
I think many of them previously changed systems and it was a nightmare; they can’t imagine having a seamless implementation. The first time I switched to Campus, from Pentamation, yeah…I had quakes! My advice to districts is to clean your data because that prevents any quakes.

What do you tell districts about the Infinite Campus the company?
Infinite Campus is innovative, flexible, and always ready for the next challenge. The company grows with our needs. I believe Infinite Campus can lead us into the 22nd century because it looks to the future and is solving tomorrow’s problems.

What are your favorite tools and features in the Campus SIS?

  • Scheduling. My team recently completed scheduling before June, before teachers even left for vacation. And that was during the cutover to Campus…usually, you learn a new system first and then do the scheduling. But my team was able to do scheduling during cutover because the module is so intuitive and robust. My administrators got a summer for the first time!
  • Another feature that I love is the powerful Parent Portal. Parents can monitor lateness and absences and see assignments and how one test score changes a grade. Just like stock traders watch the market, our ‘parent traders’ constantly monitor and, more important, get involved in their child’s education.
  • Because Campus easily integrates with other products, our teachers can grade in Office 365 and grades show up in the Infinite Campus Grade Book…that is a unique feature that teachers love.
  • Lastly, the ability to graduation map is a key capability…to quickly identify which kids are not on track for graduation, that is so important.

What do you think about the monthly enhancements/new releases?
The fact you do them shows you are a research and development company. A K12 SIS should be flexible and evolve because the needs of schools constantly change. Infinite Campus recognizes that education is always evolving; their SIS and training evolve right along with it.
